Established in 1882 as a small settlement near a Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railway switch, Pearland was named after the region's abundant pear groves. The city remained largely agricultural until oil was discovered in the 1930s. Officially incorporated in 1959, Pearland has since expanded to nearly 126,000 residents.
